The Story

Jenny is unplanned pregnant by her new boyfriend Bolle. Their relationship is characterized by a strong physical and emotional attraction, which makes all obvious conflicts fade into the background in the intoxication of crystal meth. When the youth welfare office finds out about the pregnancy, she is asked to find a family midwife. Jenny reluctantly agrees. Her first son Lucas already lives with her mother Renate, which is why she is afraid of losing custody of her second child.

The meeting with midwife Marla is therefore characterized by scepticism. The two women could not be more different. Nevertheless, an unusual bond develops between them over time, giving Jenny perspective and self-respect. She is even prepared to confide her biggest secret to Marla: In a few weeks, she has to start serving a prison sentence for an offense that lies far in the past. Jenny starts her prison sentence early in the hope of getting a place in the mother and child facility with her baby. The birth of her daughter is a magical moment that makes Jenny forget all her worries for a moment. She promises her baby that she will never let go. But this decision is no longer in her hands.

The Music

Vena's music was intended to match the documentary style of the film.
The idea was to create a counterpoint to the hard synthesizers that appear in the source music within the film and rather tell the story of Jenny's development. I also used soft, calm pads to emphasize Jenny's change of perspective and character development. As it was my first feature film, I initially wanted to write a big score, to permeate the film with music with several leitmotifs and stages of development, but it quickly became clear - also through the feedback from Chiara - that the film didn't need this at all. Due to the clear, honest acting of the protagonists and the documentary-style camera work, music was only needed at specific points, which in turn has a strong emotionality without being too distracting. It was very important to Chiara to preserve this “neutral” character and not to have a superimposed big score.
In the end, we opted for the light, floating sounds to match Jenny's emotional state, who is also in limbo and seems to be overwhelmed by her life.
The score was rounded off with another collaboration with Philippa Kinsky, with whom I wrote the song “Faithful”, which became the title track of the film and found its place in the film's turning point.
